…for our first collaborative adventure KOLINGA and MOVE welcome Egyptian Lover (Stones Throw, USA), Awesome Tapes From Africa (ATFA, USA) and you (!!) for a rare and strangely appropriate double bill in the funky surrounds of the Ezra Pound Block Party space.

The Los Angelean electro hip-hop pioneer, 8-0-8-King, and self professed “Freak-o-holic, The Egyptian Lover returns to Perth with his electrofying live show after blowing away crowds at last years Stones Throw 25yr Anniversary tour.

Also returning to Perth, no doubt with a fresh hall of obscure and sublime african tape cassetes found in the dusty back streets and far flung market places of Africa, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa will deliver his one-of-a-kind cassette tape DJ set experience.

From humble beginnings as a DJ with Uncle Jamms Army at the L.A Sports Arena in the early 80s, Egyptian Lover has stood the test of time, in the process becoming one of the most iconic figures associated with West Coast electro hip-hop. Building on 80s party anthems like ‘Egypt Egypt,’ ‘My House (on the Nile)’ and ‘Girls,’ over the last decade, his electrifying stage show and his mastery of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, have seen him become a festival favourite throughout Europe, Asia and Australasia. Following the release of his excellent 1983–1988 compilation album on Stones Throw and a show-stealing performance at The Rosemount last year, we’re extremely excited to welcome Egyptian Lover back to Perth.http://www.stonesthrow.com/egyptianlover

Brian Shimkovitz was on a Fulbright scholarship in Ghana when he got hooked on the cassette culture of the region. Street vendors hawked West African recordings in myriad genres, from highlife to African disco, old left-field soul to curious local pop. Much of these styles are largely unheard outside of West Africa. Since 2006, Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog, and then record label, has been shedding light on the obscure and wonderful sounds of African music recorded on tape from the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond. Traveling from nightclub to festival stage to DIY performance space, Awesome Tapes From Africa cassette tape DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years with an analog-anchored agility not heard or seen anywhere else. http://www.awesometapes.com/
